Some jewellery is lovely to look at. Other pieces make you want to pick them up and ask where they’ve been. This 9ct gold key pendant, set with a genuine 1906 Edward VII half sovereign, is firmly in the second camp.
A coin with a story
The centrepiece is a 22ct gold half sovereign dated 1906, struck during the reign of King Edward VII. One side carries his portrait. The reverse shows the famous design of St George slaying the dragon, one of the most recognisable images in British coinage.
Half sovereigns were made to circulate, so a coin like this really was part of everyday life more than a century ago. It would have passed through hands, pockets and purses in the Edwardian era. Today it has a second life as wearable jewellery.
The key: a symbol with staying power
Around the coin sits a 9ct gold mount in the shape of a decorative key. Keys have long stood for security, treasured secrets, new beginnings and “unlocking” something meaningful, which is why they’ve been loved in jewellery for generations.
Here, delicate scrollwork sits above the coin, and the coin itself is held in an ornate circular setting. The result feels distinctly antique but isn’t fussy. The gold does the talking.

How to wear it
It’s a versatile piece, and there are a few ways to style it:
- On a chunky gold chain for a bold, confident look. The weight of the pendant suits a substantial chain.
- As a standalone statement. Worn on its own against a simple knit or a crisp white shirt, it becomes the focal point of the outfit.
- Layered with finer chains of different lengths for a collected, vintage-inspired effect.
Please note that the chain isn’t included, so you can choose one that suits your own style.
Pre-loved and full of character
As with all our vintage jewellery, this is a pre-loved piece and may show signs of age and wear. We think that’s part of the appeal. Small marks and a softened finish are the evidence of a life already lived, and they make each piece individual.
It also makes a thoughtful gift for a milestone birthday, an anniversary, or anyone born in 1906 or with a love of British history.
